New Release and Review: Shucked by Kate Canterbary

His best friend’s little sister is not an option.

No one ever accused Beckett Loew of being the nice Loew brother, especially not Sunny Du Jardin.

Stuck back home in the quirky town of Friendship, Rhode Island, Beckett is scrambling to save his family’s oyster bar and take care of his teenage brother. He doesn’t have time to deal with the beautiful, sunshine-y owner of the new vegan cafe next door too. His best friend’s little sister may be all grown up, but Sunny’s still a distracting pain in his side.

No one expects much from Sunny Du Jardin, especially not Beckett Loew.

She’s not worried about her older brother’s tall, dark, and broody best friend or the battles he insists on waging with her every day. She’s not the same kid he teased years ago. Now, she composts his type for breakfast.

They’re all wrong for each other.

Bitter rivals.

Complete opposites.

Off limits.

Except they can’t keep their hands off each other.

They tell themselves it’s nothing more than a steamy summer fling until secrets spill and real trouble comes their way.

CW: chronic illness (epilepsy), mention of childhood bullying, putting the fun in dysfunctional families, parents who turn into accidental criminals, incarceration, open door spice, suspense and moments of peril.

REVIEW:

I don’t think there is an author out there that writes better grumpy/sunshine better than Kate Canterbary. She takes the definition of a grumpy MC to a new level with Beckett, and I am here for it. Not only do you have an amazing grumpy/sunshine, it’s small town romance with amazing side characters. It’s brother’s best friend AND enemies to lovers. You get all these tropes but what’s more important you get the banter, wit, emotion, and heart that only this author can bring. Whether this is your first book from this author or you’ve read all of her work, you will be emersed in the town of Friendship wishing you were shucking oysters, eating cookies, and attending all the wacky festivals.

This book is smart, sexy, sweet, and funny. It will also grab you with the realness of the characters. Beckett is a fixer, and he has his work cut out for him fixing problems with his very dysfunctional family and the troubles they have found themselves in. While trying to fix everyone, he realizes that Sunny isn’t the little girl that he picked on all those years ago. Sunny is a free spirit who is determined to have control over her life and her disability from being smothered her entire life. Sunny also remembers all the torture Beckett and her brother put her through as a child. This leads to some heated banter and verbal sparring. The tension in this book is perfection, not just between these two but with other events that happen. I’m not spoiling it for you – trust me it’s worth it.

If you’ve never read a Kate Canterbary book, I don’t know what you are doing with your life, but you need to read this one now. Once you are done, then you need to go read her entire backlist. If you are like me and have been waiting not-so-patiently for this book, it is better than you could’ve hoped for. Both Sunny and Beckett have made it to my top 3 favorite FMC and MMC respectively. Now I need to go do a re-read.
