“I’m afraid my vagina might turn itself inside out if you try to give it another orgasm so soon.” — Scarlett Bodine
Raised by her three overbearing brothers, Scarlett is a hell-raising tomboy with a tool belt. A tornado stirring up trouble everywhere she goes. Her favorite pastimes? Drinking any man under the table and two-stepping. But she has zero interest in love. Scarlett’s only being neighborly when she claims her sexy next-door neighbor as her new pet project.
Devlin is a man at rock bottom. Marriage, political career, five-year plan to Washington, D.C. All destroyed with one well-placed jab. The golden boy is now the black sheep relegated to Bootleg Springs, a tiny West Virginia town with two claims to fame: 1. Moonshine and 2. The cold case disappearance of a teen girl.
Devlin just wants to lick his wounds. But Scarlett has other ideas for his tongue… and the rest of him. She’s determined to bring him back to life, even if getting him back on his feet means never seeing him again. But when an old mystery becomes new news, she’ll need his help to survive the scandal.
Review
Since her very first book Lucy Score has been an automatic-one-click-don’t-even-have-to-read-the-blurb-will-ALWAYS-buy author. She is one of a very short list of authors that I seriously fan-girl over. When I fall in love with one of her books, I sometimes wonder that her next book can’t be better than this one. Well, every time she proves me wrong. Lucy has paired with Claire Kingsley to bring us this new series. Full disclosure…I’ve only read one of Claire Kingsley’s books which was a heart-wrenching book that I did enjoy, and have heard good things about her others. In short…this book is AMAZING!
This book is the first in an interconnected series. Each book is a complete standalone focusing on a particular couple. What ties the series together is the family and a mystery that is uncovered in the first book. Trust me, the mystery does not overtake the book or distract from the couple. It’s just an extra layer of goodness.
Bootleg Springs is a small town that’s famous for its moonshine. Its characters are quirky but loveable and loyal. It’s everything you think a small town should be. When I read Lucy’s Blue Moon series, I thought I wanted to live in Blue Moon. Well, I’ve repacked my bags and I’m moving to Bootleg Springs! The heroine, Scarlett, is a spitfire. She is independent, sassy, and amazing. She is the local handyman and has no problem putting anyone in their place. Delvin is a disgraced lawmaker going through a divorce that has escaped to Bootleg Springs to recover. At the beginning of this book Delvin is vulnerable and lost. Over the course of the book Scarlett and the residents of Bootleg Springs put the life and fun back in Delvin. The secondary characters in this book are as wonderful and interesting as the main characters. I want to know more about all of them. I can’t wait to read the rest of this series (especially after that Epilogue!!!).
If you are looking for a small town rom-com with quirky characters then Lucy Score should be your go-to author. If you are looking for a strong, sassy, independent heroine, then Lucy Score should definitely be your go-to author. I haven’t read an author that does small town rom-coms or sassy heroines better. I don’t give many 5 star reviews, but with this book I wish I could give it more than 5 stars. This book and this author should be next on your TBR list. It has definitely moved to the list of books I will always recommend to others.
