If you need an emotional read and a good cry then this is the book for you. I mean that in the best possible way. This book will make you sad cry, happy cry, OMG-how-is-this-author-in-my-head cry, that’s-how-I-feel cry, want-to-hug-the-characters cry, that’s-so-sweet cry. It is one of those books that will stay with you.
Now I’ll be honest, I’m not a fan of YA/NA. I feel weird reading about characters that could be my children. Even though the characters are YA/NA, the book doesn’t feel like a YA/NA. Brooke and Sebastian are very mature and have to face very real adult issues. They do so in a very real and adult way. Be prepared, it takes a while for the main characters to meet. But TRUST me…the background stories are definitely important and worth the read.
I want to address a main subject of the book…grief and depression. While I’ve never experienced the type of grief that is in the book, I have experienced the depression. I’m always very hesitant to read any book where an author addresses depression. Too many times it feels like they are trivializing feelings and never quite get it right. Well, Claire Kingsley gets it. All depression is different, but this book is the first time I’ve thought “THAT’S how I feel”. She does a very good job describing the “feeling” of depression. It gives me hope that maybe those who don’t suffer will get a glimpse of what those that do suffer feel. And for that I’m very grateful for Claire Kingsley and this book.
This book is definitely worth the read. Just make sure you get your tissues ready and have a rom-com book ready to read after this one.
